Therapies > Manual Lymph Drainage

Lymphedema is a condition where there is an accumulation of fluid in the interstitial tissues of the body. Lymphedema can occur due to many reasons, such as surgical removal of the lymph nodes, infection, radiation therapy, trauma, obesity, congenital dysfunction of the lymphatic vessels, or due to venous insufficiency. Regardless of the cause, the resultant effect is similar; swelling of the involved limb or trunk, tissue and skin changes and increased incidence of soft tissue infection (cellulitis). This swelling can cause impairment in both function and tissue healing. Lymphedema can be successfully managed with a form of physical therapy called Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT). This involves lymphatic massage, compression, skin care and patient education.
